When I use the shift key in my internet browser it functions as a backspace. it does not matter if it is chrome or ie, it does not work in either setting. If I use it while in a word document, it opens my internet explorer. What is going on...I can only use the caps key to create upper case and am not able to get questions marks and such.

Keyboard damaged, maybe you spilt something in it. Repalce the keyboard. If this is a laptop, if under warranty you can seek repair on it, but otherwise your going to either have to buy a USB keyboard instead or replace the computer (cheapest option for a laptop since a i3 Laptop is only $249 at Walmart).
