I know, the board is ancient...but it runs like new. What RAM Would you suggest for this board now (as the ram listed on the website is far since gone). I'm running an OCZ Revocard with an Intel Q9550 processor and a EVGA 280 GTX (yes, another dinosaur....but it rates at 7.3 on the windows experience index).

I am looking at 4GB sticks of memory....but can use 8GB sticks if they are more desirable. My budget is flexible with time. The Q9550 processor is not overclocked at the moment, but is set up with a Zalman 9700 air cooler, so I think I have room for overclocking. I am awaiting a replacement board for my EVGA 790i FTW mobo and plan to use that as opposed to the 790i Ultra that I am using as a a temporary replacement, as it doesn't seem to be as good as the previous board that one of the memory slots died on.

OCing? I ask because if at stock you are running with the FSB at 1333 - that will determine your top DRAM freq (1333), if running the OC up and the FSB at 1600 then you could run 1600 sticks native. Your mobo is limited to 8GB total so for full 8GB will want a 4x2GB set, if not OCing look at 1333 - might look at the GSkill Ripjaws X - F3-10666CL7Q-8GBXH, 1333 w/ a nice tight CL7, these should work well for you, and if the time comes to OC, get the FSB up to 1600, these sticks can go right with it and OC to 1600, maybe at CL8 , and should at CL9 regardless

Yes. Thanks for the input. The counters are what I find more difficult to figure out. I've played with them in the past. The specs state it can run up to 2000Mhz memory....but I've never been able to stabilize it at that.

I was thinking of Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT1TX0. Based on the first response from toddybody. Though I've gotten better memory from Kingston in the past.

Judging from the suggested memory list (can't seem to find mobo specs) I think you're right. I have two sticks of 2GB 1333MHz in the ultra right now....cheap kingston ram and it's rating higher that the old Kingsston HyperX blue memory. Guess I'll look at the 4x2GB sets. (I want to keep the swap file off my SSCard.

I can unlink the RAM from the FSB as well, and set them independently.

I just found out they are sending me another 790i FTW. No upgrade...but I'm happy to get the FTW back. It's much more compatible with other hardware, and much more stable than the Ultra.

Yes, I know. I'll be migrating the Q9550 to the EVGA 780i Ultra mobo. I think I might have an I5-2500k cpu at my shop, and the memory should work fine for either. No, no cpu. The offered 120 bucks in EVGA credit, which I declined. So I'm getting the P67 FTW mobo because they ran out of stock on the 780i mobos. The only real negative I've seen about the P67 chipset is that it doesn't support onboard graphics. But I couldn't care less about that. Just wanted some input on preferable CPU and maybe RAM, as the Ultra could use the G.Skill 1866 Ripjaws I already ordered.
It might be just fine for the P67... I just wanted some input on it.

I'm thinking the EVGA Ultra will make a fine server for home.
