Long story short i had to replace my hard drive on my Dell Inspiron N5110. Purchased the replacement straight from dell 750GB WD drive. I successfully installed windows 8.1 from the 64bit disk i purchased with product key. Windows opened and apps installed. Once i restarted the laptop i began to nose around on it looking at all the new features of windows 8.1 (my old hdd had windows 7). After about 3-4 min the windows error "ding" was heard and my screen went blank. I restarted my laptop and it loaded to a blank screen. NO CURSOR was saw like most of the issues with windows 8.1 ctrl + alt + del does not work.

I tried removing the battery and power cord and resetting it. This proved successful and windows again loaded. but after 3-4 min the same problem happened. I tried to "refresh" and "restore" the pc and this also worked the same. all ends in a blank screen. Remember this is not an update this is a complete and total install on a bare HDD.

I ran diagnostics and every time it comes back clean with no errors found. and yes the hdd is recognized in bios.

Today i called dell software support. They transferred me to technical support which they wanted to charge me to use even though i just received my hard drive yesterday. (i understand my product is out of warranty). But i thought i could receive assistance since this is a new hardware purchase.

Anybody have any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions?

Boot your machine from your Installation disk, but choose 'Repair' instead of Install. Choose 'Troubleshoot'' and 'Advanced Options'. Then it's Command Prompt.
First try System File Checker
Winkey plus 'X'
Choose Command Prompt (Admin)
Type sfc /scannow then Enter

It finds and fixes errors in Windows, but doesn't always report them. Run it and see if the fault disappears after re-booting your system

Ok tried this. I get this message: "there is a system repair pending which required a reboot to complete. restart windows and run sfc again."

I rebooted 5 times. No success. Same message every time. Each time i reboot i have to take battery out and unplug to "reset" in order to pull up menu. If i dont do this f8 is useless. Would it be possible to completely wipe all files and reinstall windows. Would the product key still work since i used it once already?

No problem to re-install, key can be used as many times as you like as long as only on one PC at a time. If you decide to install again, be sure to install to Unallocated Space by deleting all partitions using Drive Options (Advanced). Allow Windows to create it's own partitions.

Seems you need a BIOS update to run 8.1, but that requires Windows to be running. Suggest you try your 8.1 disk again, but this time install to Unallocated Space by deleting all partitions at the 'Where do you want to install Windows' screen using Drive Options (Advanced). Hopefully it will run long enough to update your BIOs...(BIOS version A11 is what you should have)

Try updating the BIOS. This conversation at Dell Support Forum seems to say that it works with 8.1 after a BIOS update.

I think you'll be looking for the A11 version.
