What Would Be The Best USB WiFi Adapter For Me?

Hello everybody!

I'm looking for a new wifi adapter via USB connection for playing online Minecraft servers.

My current adapter is some "nano"-model by Jensen, and it is really bad. Its signal is really weak and stuff. It is just too bad for playing. I know I should buy a PCI-e wifi-card that I can put inside of my computer, but I won't get one of those. I will stick with the USB ones.

So, what would be THE best option for me? We have a pretty bad internet speed, I'm not totally sure about the right speed though but it really is kinda bad. I think that it is the adapter that makes the connection even worse for me. The router isn't that far away (3-4 meters from me with couple of walls :p) but a better adapter with a stronger signal and a 5Ghz link speed ( yes, the Jensen adapter doesn't have an option for me to change the speed from 2.4Ghz to 5!!) could make a difference, I think.

I usually play Minecraft on The Hive server that is an EU server (and I live in Europe.) I currently get about 55-60 ping on it with the current adapter wich isn't that bad, they say. I still get sometimes stupid lag spikes and three-bar connections though. The Hive is a server that only has pvp on it and I can't fight and pvp well with the small lags bcs I can't get the important hits on my opponents. I visited my friend that plays MC too and has a wifi with 50Mbs speed and he has SO AMAZING connection to the Hive! He gets no lag and often kills every1 he sees. I would really, really like to play as well as him but I can't do it with my current wifi problems.

About 3 people uses the wifi at the same time in my house, but only I am playing and doing the heavy stuff :D.

So, expert help would be really appreciated and I would be so thankful if some1 could complete this problem bcs if this situation just continues, i will have to stop gaming online. And I don't want to do that!

Thank You!

A dual band adapter might help. First run INSSIDER and see how crowded the 2.4g band is. You may be able to improve your signal just by changing to a different channel.

Those tiny little cards are trading size for antenna space. The first thing to try is to use a $3.00 USB extension cable and see if locating the adapter away from the case improves your signal levels at all. This cable will also be useful for any other adapter for the same reason. This is why some of the USB adapters come on long cables so you can put them away from the metal case of the computer.

5g of course only works if your router has it. You will in general get better signal levels on 2.4 especially going though walls than 5g. The trade off is if a slightly weaker signal on 5g may still be better than one with lots of interference from neighbors on 2.4g. Your neighbors 5g signals also have more trouble getting into your house. There is no way to even predict this since houses and neighbors vary so much. In a open room with no interference 2.4 and 5 perform about the same.

Your other option will be powerline network devices if you can not get wireless to work well These tend to be more stable than wireless for gaming but like wireless there are some houses they do not work well in.

Oh, thank u for so good answer!

Ok, I am a noob with wifi stuff ;), so... here are my next nooby questions;

1. What is a dual-band adapter? How do I change a channel?
2. I was thinking about those powerline network devices u were talking about. How do I use them? Do I just plug it in? And where do I plug it? ( LOL I know I'm so bad) And what would be a powerful and cheap-o option for me?

Thank u again and sry for the bad english! Btw my current adapter is this one here: http://www.gigantti.fi/product/tietokoneet/reitittimet-ja-verkkolaitteet/JENALNANO/jensen-nano-wlan-usb-adapteri ( Lol I know that the link page is a random finnish page but the product is right xD)

dual band is 2.4 and 5 radios it just give you a different option.
Channels are set in the router wireless settings. Only use 1,6 or 11. If you run INSSIDER it will be more obvious what this means

Powerline are pretty much that simple you plug one into a outlet in both locations. You then plug ethernet cables into the powerline boxes. It in effect makes your power in your house into a ethernet cable
