  1. 2 types of connections for semi recent drives.

SATA, or IDE. Google for the visual and pin differences.
    Which is yours?
  2. I have IDE for the DVD player. I don't see where I would put this on the motherboard

    Right.
Either you can buy an IDE/SATA bridge device for $10-$15. Which will probably but maybe not work correctly.
Or you can just buy a new SATA DVD drive for $18 or so. Which will work 100%.
