7970 GHz and 280x crossfire is causing bsod

Ok first of all here is my current setup

i5 2500k at 4.2 GHz
MSI p67a-gd65-b3
Corsair CMX8GX3M4A1600C9 6GB RAM (was originally 4x2GB but one was faulty)
Sapphire 7970 GHz edition 3GB
Silverstone Strider Plus 850W

I purchased a MSI 280x 3GB to go with the 7970. Uninstalled AMD drivers, put the card in and installed the newest drivers and enabled crossfire. Whenever I opened a 3d application or game I would immediately get a bsod.

Figuring my PSU is more than capable of powering these cards I uninstalled the AMD drivers again and also used Display Driver Uninstaller to make sure no files were left behind. Installed the drivers again and still had no luck. I did also try disabling ULPS as I heard it could cause issues but it didn't have any effect.

Both of the cards and PCI-E lanes are ok as I have tested them individually and they are fine. What could the issue be?

What's the clock discrepancy between the two cards? If you have Overdrive enabled, disable it. If you don't have it enabled, try enabling it and forcing both cards to run at the same clocks. Crossfire Autolink should take care of that, but sometimes it doesn't.

I think they have the same clocks but I will double check tomorrow when I try to get them both running again.

Since the 280x is just a reskinned 7970 they can be crossfired.

Sorry, it is Corsair CMX8GX3M4A1600C9. Originally 4x2GB but I found a long time ago that one module was faulty so I just stuck with 6GB.

You cant crossfire a 7000 series with a r9 series. With amd you can crossfire the cards as long as they are from the same series. for example all of the r9 cards can crossfire but not the r9 and the r6 series

Never mind I guess I was wrongly informed sorry,
I just read that the 7970 had to be the first card for some reason

Sorry I didn't specify, both cards are 3GB models.

Every other website says you can crossfire a 7970 and a 280x because they are essentially the exact same card. In fact it's been done by lots of people...

I've had good and bad experiences with AMD drivers, try a really old one from last year and give it a go. It sounds like a wild guess (and for the most part it is ;) ) but I've found the new drivers can make certain setups worse.

The 7970 is currently the master card.

I'll try downloading some older drivers tomorrow, thanks.

Ok little follow up, I have tried switching the cards around to the other slots, using older drivers and also making sure that the clock speeds were set to be the same but I'm still getting a bsod when I try to run a game or crossfire benchmark. I'm at my wits end so if I can't get it working in a few days then I think I'll just sell one or both of the cards and see if I can get a better single card. Can anyone suggest anything else at all that might be the issue?
