I have recently purchased a Lacie 5big Pro and intend to back up my Mac Book my desktop PC and eventually be able to stream iTunes movies and music to my TV. I am first trying to backup my desktop windows 7 ultimate PC. I have bought NovaBACKUP to do this. As I try to configure the software to automatically backup to the NAS it requires a logon the fields are
Domain:_________
Username:_______
Password:_______

I have made a user for this computer to connect ot the NAS but I can't seem to find the domain it is joined to(I'm 99% sure there is no domain any computer on my network is joined to anyone). It is though joined to WORKGROUP (the NAS that is) and so is my computer. I did some googling but had a lot of trouble working out how to start a domain that this NAS can join as well as the computers that need to be backed up.

I am wondering is this the best way/only way to backup to this NAS using this software?
How will setting up a domain effect wanting to stream to my Smart TV?
Is there a simpler faster, neater, quicker way to do this? If so what?
If not how do I got about setting up a domain so I may backup to this NAS?

Setting up a domain requires a domain controller e.g. Active Directory from Windows Server or SAMBA from Linux which is a server that responds to security authentication requests.

I don't think a simple scheduled backup task would need that.

Lacie 5Big Pro support SMB and FTP protocols, from NovaBACKUP user manual, "NovaBACKUP includes the ability to backup to a number of online storage devices
including FTP, Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and NovaStor Web Storage
Service (xSP). " you may follow P.123 "Configuring FTP Storage Device" or P.128 "Network Devices Settings" to setup backup destination.

In P.128 "Network Devices Settings" it stated that "Domain Name" field is optional, you may leave it empty.

The quickest way in my opinion is to use the FTP protocol. Setting up FTP in Lacie is easy.

Does that mean that my backup is accessible to other people on the internet if they have my username and password and have to right IP and port number? or is it purely only accessible on my network?

So there will be an option to allow access from the internet and I can turn that off to make it more secure and then create a strong password to make it most secure any thing else to make it secure?

Will my backup take place over the network or will I be uploading the files and downloading them into the NAS again as my internet is very slow?

Can it then be intercepted by someone somehow?

If you don't connect it to the internet, it will be as secure as the rest of your computers. Internet access would not be setup by default.

The backup will be done over the local network unless you actually connect to it using the external address, then it will go out of your network to the public network and back into your network.
