I bought a Nvidia GTX 650 video card (not Ti, or Ti boost) without thinking much about bottle-necking. Now here i am and i am having a huge problem with bottle necking. i have decided to try and upgrade my CPU, but i am clueless about which one i should get i have a price range of anywhere around 150 and at most probably 170.
Extra specs:

Cpu: Intel Pentium E2200

Motherboard: Dell Inc.
Model: 0K068D (Socket 775)

PSU: Thermaltake TR2 430W

Ram: 4gb

Os: Windows 8.1

Thanks in advance

So what is you overall budget now that you know what you're looking for?

The Q6600 was a good easy idea that you could do until you can save up enough money to get a proper system.

The 775 socket is retired and since your motherboard doesn't support OC you may want to look into getting a whole new rig. Not saying your rig is bad (nearly the same specs as my secondary/backup rig) but if you want to upgrade it's unfortunately something that doesn't upgrade well (these days).

There are many sites were you can buy factory refurbished Dells, HPs and Lenovos for fairly decent prices (e-bay and amazon come to mind but there are more). Just to mention you can put together something as good or better then the ones in that category yourself for the same or slightly (100-150$) more.

With that motherboard you will not be able to upgrade to a CPU that would make a noticeable difference. And I seriously doubt even if you wanted to try that you could purchase those CPUs anymore unless you found one on ebay.

Yes the CPU is probably holding back gaming performance some but there should still be several games that you can play.

Your motherboard will support the Q6600 which has a passmark score of 2973 vs 1174 for your E2200. They are good for overclocking, but I don't know how well your OEM board will do for overclocking. They sell used for around $40. If you can and want to overclock you will want an aftermarket cooler. The Q6600 would be a cheap upgrade and would minimize the bottleneck issue until you can save more to get a newer/better computer.

You cannot overclock a Dell motherboard. You also cannot put an ATX board in a BTX case (without extreme modification). So you're basically looking at building a new rig while re-using some of your current parts. It would be cheaper and easier to buy a refurb. or build a low-end gaming rig.

Her are a few examples of refurbished computers
1. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2X51DD4961

2.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8865881&CatId=2627

I'll have a look tomorrow if you're interested and try to put something together via pcpartpicker or something to show the cost of a more modern rig that you could swap your GPU and PSU into to save some cash (it would be a little less $ than the ones I've posted here - the 2 most expensive components would be the CPU and OS)

*IF* your motherboard uses sata connections and not IDE connections it would be pretty easy for you to upgrade your motherboard and cpu. If your motherboard uses IDE ports than upgrading would be too much trouble. Also is your RAM ddr2 or ddr3?

$150-170 could get you-
Intel Pentium g3220(or similar model), motherboard and RAM.
AMD Athlon x4 750k or 760k, motherboard, and new RAM.
AMD FX4300, motherboard, and new RAM.
Older i3, motherboard, and new RAM.
Newer i3 and motherboard, but probably not new RAM.
FX6300 and motherboard, but probably not new RAM.

Hopefully you won't need new RAM too.
