Tried new motherboard, wouldn't post, then tried old motherboard and also wouldn't post? Did my power supply suddenly go bad?

I am really perplexed by this problem.

Until this afternoon I had a very stable desktop system, but the USB ports on the motherboard had been going bad for a while, and in any case I wanted to upgrade the motherboard/processor/ram, etc., etc.

I then replaced the following items:
Motherboard (new one is an ASUS M5A97)
Processor (AMD FX 6300)
RAM (two sticks of Kingston Hyper X)

but otherwise keep the system the same. On first boot I get fans, lights, etc. but apparently no post. I try the usual things like on this post: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/311584-31-dead-motherboard-post, including breadboarding, and no clues to be found, not even any beeps from booting with no RAM. So I figure, ok, I got a DOA motherboard from ASUS, I'll just return it and reinstall the old motherboard/memory/processor combo.

Then I try installing the old system and I get the same type of no post behavior. This is with all components that just worked 5 hours ago before I took them out. Go through the usual diagnostics and again nothing. I have a spare video card and try that, but still the same.

Any idea what could be causing this behavior? It seems like the only constant left is the power supply, but it was just working fine before I started this upgrade project, so it seems unlikely that it would have suddenly failed. But I have no other ideas here.

Thanks for any help!

Ok, I solved it, and this seems to be a rare/unusual/unintuitive problem because I had read a lot about no-post issues on this forum and elsewhere and never came across this issue. So hopefully this helps someone somewhere sometime.

My graphics card is this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187036
(SPARKLE SFPX94GT512U2 GeForce 9400 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express)

It has two output ports, a VGA and a DVI. I have two monitors.
If I plug in BOTH the VGA and DVI then the graphics card does not seem to work with the motherboard when I boot and I don't see that it has posted.
If I plug in just the DVI, the same thing happens.
However if I ONLY plug in the VGA, then every posts correctly.

The strange thing was that this was happening to my old board when I tried to reinstall it and there I have no idea why.
