I recently bought this http://www.amazon.com/DOCK-Adapter-MB981U3N-1SA-SATA-Drive/dp/B009VBM8I6/ref=pd_ybh_5 to get some data off some old ide drives that has windows xp installed on them. when i connect the adapter to the drives they both spin up fine no issues there. the problem is that the drive doesnt show up in my computer and the only way it is visible is in devices and printers but nothing can be done with the drive. i tried to see if it would populate the drive and this error popped up " volume information for this disk". Thanks for the help
my specs are:
Windows 7 64 bit home premium
Amd fx 8350
Gtx 670

The fact that it "shows up" in Devices etc. may not mean that the HDD is being detected. It may mean only that the USB device (the Icy Dock itself) is being detected.

Check these two things:
1. An IDE HDD needs a power supply connected to it as well as being plugged into the 40-pin data connector along the edge. I See the Icy Dock has a female 4-pin Molex connector on its top near the on/off button, and it comes with a short 4-wire adapter with 4-pin female Molex connectors on both ends. You must connect this between the output on top of the Icy Dock and the HDD's power input connector.

2. ANY IDE port MUST have a Master device to operate. On adapter boxes like this one, usually the box expects you to set the IDE device's jumper (on...

On adapter boxes like this one, usually the box expects you to set the IDE device's jumper (on a set of pins on the back edge of the HDD, between the power and data connectors) to make it a Master (or, a Master with No Slave Present, if that is an option). For this setting, look for a diagram on the HDD itself and use that.
