Replacing an HDD and looking for suggestions

So when I first got this hard drive( This is the exact model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148433 ), I believe it was mid 2009 and I was rather inexperienced with computers in general at the time.

I was 16, building my first computer, and miraculously it worked, and still does. However, I never did any proper testing of products to ensure they were running as they should, including doing any sort of benchmark of my hard drive. Basically, I don't know what the read/write speeds SHOULD be for the drive I currently have, but they are undoubtedly lower than what they should be, and after 4.5 years I really can't complain much.

I'm looking for assistance in figuring out a good replacement for my HDD as well as a small and affordable SSD.

I currently have my eye on the current Barracuda 2TB model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

And the Samsung 840 EVO 120GB:

I am more of a gamer than anything else, and I'm looking for a low cost but effective replacement for my current single 1TB drive. I primarily play MMOs, and with the upcoming release of Elder Scrolls Online, I expect that it will be my primary game played, so 120GB SSD should be sufficient for my OS, ESO, and perhaps 1 or 2 other games. I don't frequently switch between games so I'm not concerned about overusing the SSD.

I'd like some help though in making sure this is a decent option for my price range, Those two drives would cost around 175$ and I would prefer to keep it at or below that. And I would also be curious to know how much an improvement in speed I could expect over my current hard drive, and I'd also be interested in just how bad my current drive is(if it really even is). Below is a screencap of a Parkdale test(I can run another tool if anyone knows of a better one, this is just the first one I found that seemed reliable)

- the bottom drive is an external

My current system:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz (Clocked at 3.7GHz)
16GB 1600MHz RAM
ZOTAC GTX760 AMP! (OC'd at 1150MHz GPU - 6880MHz Memory)
Win7 Home Premium 64-bit

Thanks in advance for anyone who helps, I'm not too knowledgeable on storage devices quite yet, and am working on learning.

just so you know you linked a 1tb barracuda

anyway both are excellent choices and for a hdd you want to look at spindle rpm and sata interface. a suggestion, if you want to save a few bucks go with a crucial m500 ssd similar marks for less cash unless you can get an evo around the same price then go for the evo.

Thank you for the suggestion, and link to that site. I hadn't heard of it before and I'm sure it will come in handy later, however Newegg currently has a 10$ off promo for the Samsung EVO so it's actually cheaper there, and the difference for the Barracuda is negligible.

Glad to see my initial choices are decent to someone else, but I'm still going to leave the topic open longer to see if anyone else might know of some particularly good deals at the moment and the like.

I'm also quite curious as to exactly how badly my current hard drive is performing, if anyone is able to give some insight in to that.

I like your SSD choice but if you can spend more, think about a 240/256GB SSD. I like my steam games on SSD for fast load times. I would also consider a WD HDD as I feel they are more reliable. I say this both from articles I've read and from personal experience with HDD failures where I work.

I apologize for disappearing and not picking an answer to this earlier, some bothersome stuff came up that I had to deal with.

Anyway, thank you very much for your drive test, I used that tool to check my own drive and... Well I know drives have some drop off in speed when thy have more stuff on them but something tells me mine is still running much slower than it should be.

@Dish_moose: I'm rather impartial to hard drive manufacturers to be honest, and I think I'm going to just stick with the Seagate considering I am rather satisfied at the life of my last one, but thank you for the help in ensuring my SSD choice was decent. And while I would like to step it up to a 240GB drive, I simply can't afford it right now and I likely won't be able to for quite some time. I also rarely play games on steam save for very small ones that take up less than 2GB (I enjoy various indie games when not playing MMOs), so I do think the 120GB will be sufficient for quite some time.

Again, thanks everyone for the help! I hope I'm able to get my new drives soon, I can't wait to see what is no doubt going to be a massive improvement in speed.
