A Security Concern

Hi all

I have been receiving remote support from a service adviser and it's beginning to look like I might have to take some kind of formal action against them. However, before they basically shut the door in my face, they requested text documents extracted from my DXDIAG and MSINFO programs, as part of their analysis of the problem apparently.

I sent them these files. So what I am wondering is, what security risk potential is there from a basically unknown entity having this info about my system? Does it make me an easier target for hacking and mischief?

Any ideas are much appreciated.
Thanks
Chillx

Right. That's why I asked "Who initiated the contact? What company is it? "

Hey Bubble
No, it's not like that. Here is some more detail. The service provider is Uplay. Their download client is not working on my system despite everything else, including Steam, being fine. They owe me two games but can't provide them. They have been requesting this and that info to help diagnose the problem. I have told them that I am considering reporting them to the authorities - hopefully to get them to pull their socks up but I will do it if they don't sort things out.

So yesterday they asked for dxdiag and msinfo txt files. Today they say in a nutshell "we might sort this out, wait and see". I have no confidence in their company any more and think it's dubious that they should want these files then make no progress with my problem.

So back to the question: if someone unknown has your DXDIAG and MSINFO text files, might they be able to mess your IT up remotely?

Reporting them to the authorities for what?

This is why it is vitally important to include all of the details in a first post. Would have saved a lot of time.

As has already been mentioned, no, these files are only diagnostic in nature. However, if they had remote access they could have generated them themselves.

Sorry ex_bubblehead but I actually think my approach was the most efficient. In fact, rather than providing more info initially I should have just only asked the question. Then everyone would have stayed focused. But everyone focused on the drama rather than the question. You in fact assumed that I was talking about a 'scheme' - I never said that. All I actually asked was "what security risk potential is there from a basically unknown entity having this info about my system? Does it make me an easier target for hacking and mischief?"

Anyway, my mind is nonetheless quietened on the subject so thanks for that. Sorry time was wasted. I'll PM wortwortwort regarding their question.

That's completely understandable. Thanks again for the help, keep up the good work. Just as an aside because it came up, Uplay has now re-opened the door and escalated my complaint to someone. Just to be fair... But it still needs fixing. Feel fee to pm me anyone if you want to know how this proceeds. Cheers
