Why one should restart server?

Assume I have big server. It has very good hybrid cooling with air, pasta and liquid that are set to keep low temperature (lower than room temperature). I will write program that will "refresh" RAM and reset cache. What would be reason to restart server? There are lots of servers that are being turned off for 2-3 days for "maintenance". Also amateur/home-made ones (much less time, but they still have few hours off).

My friend hosts a e-mail server for some 10k people. We run it 24x7x365 and the only time to shut it off isn't to actually turn it off, but to do updates.

We could do hardware updates to speed things up when the new hardware comes out (things like faster cpu, maybe add more ram), but I don't bother to unless absolutely needed.

It depends on what is being fixed or needing to be fixed. I used to maintain a tape storage server that would run tape retention tests to ensure the dlt tapes are still okay (as in won't snap while doing a backup thus loosing 800GB of data). In that time doing the tests the server would be "offline".

So I can just let it be? As long as there are no updates required and all other aspects that were mentioned in top thread are covered?

A true server or computer acting as a server with nobody surfing the web on it, etc. You shouldn't ever need to actually shut off the computer unless doing hardware maintenance. Unless something broke most actual servers aren't ever shut off.

For example a Microsoft Exchange server would only be restarted to do Microsoft Updates for security. Somebody may have to change a hard drive out in a RAID configuration due to hardware failure, then maybe the Exchange server would be down for 2 days.

If it is a true server, there should really be many reasons to restart the server. I don't use ram refresh or reset caching software on any of the servers I run. They just run and restart for security updates.

For your case, I would simply leave the server be. It sounds like you have most things covered.

May I inquire what the server does?

I said "Assume", meaning, this server doesn't exist. It asked in, because I was curious.
