After posting here and believing an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4GHz /2M/800 might work in my Intel D945GCZ Motherboard: it failed.
Would not start bios. Just ran fan hard and no HDD activity. Tried two E4600, both did the same. Re-installed original Pentium D 3.4 GHz and it booted fine. Is there anything more I should try?
Getting better performance and life from these PCs would be very nice for me. :)

Thank you.

Yea its the 945 chipset which does support Core 2 series. Work with them a lot in the older Dell optiplex's i work with a lot.
See if there's a BIOS update for the motherboard. The LGA775 socket covers a huge range of CPUs, form the Pentium 4 to the Core 2 Quad. Earlier motherboards may not know how to communicate with a newer CPU without a firmware update.

It can also turn out that the motherboard was abandoned by the manufacturer for a newer model in response to new CPUs coming out. In which case you're out of luck.
