I have had this computer for about a year now and have never had any problems until now. Whenever I play a game that is moderately graphically demanding, I can play the game for about an hour before the monitor displays a black screen. I will be playing when suddenly the image freezes, the sound stops, and finally the image turns black.
However, this issue can be temporarily relieved by playing a game on low graphic settings. For example, when playing League of Legends on the highest graphics settings, the screen goes black after about an hour of playing. When turning the graphics to the lowest possible setting, this problem does not occur. I also tested the Elder Scrolls Online and reduced the graphics settings to minimum--no problems--and then to highest, which is when the monitor showed a black screen again. I have also tried this with Steam games, including Ghost Recon, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead, and I am having the same problems with all of them.
The monitor never goes black when browsing the web or using basic programs like word processors and such.
Therefore, it appears to be an issue with the graphics card, and even though I can temporarily fix the issue, it is very frustrating to not be able to play my games at their maximum graphical potential.
Here are my computer specifications:
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Motherboard
IceQX Radeon HD 6850
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition
HAF 912 Series (my case)
Ultra 650 Watt ATX (power supply)
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8GB RAM
Seagate 1TB Serial ATA HD (3.5in harddrive)
I do not clean my computer very often, having only used a can of compressed air recently to clean my computer (first time in 6 months). I am aware that this may be a source of the problem.
What should I do? Should I buy more fans for my computer case? Could this be a temperature problem? Should I replace my GPU? Should I replace my motherboard? Is there any tests I can run to know what I'm dealing with?
Thank you for reading, and please tell me if you require any more information about my system.
