I have an AMDfx6100. I had these same types of problems except not nearly as dramatic. Given the info here, I'm just about positive it is the temperature issue. I've had the same sort of issues, and the solution turned out the heatsink, and thermal paste. After reinstalling the heatsink my cpu is sitting at 22C idle, and doesnt go above about 40C while doing some light gaming like Counter Strike, and Farcry3 will get it near 50C. The stock heatsink might not be too great, but it is definitely not that bad... as far as running at even 40C idle, something is wrong. The stock heatsink can cool your CPU better than that. It does for mine.
An aftermarket CPU cooler might be a nice buy anyway though, since low temps and nice, you can buy a nice quiet one, and they are fairly cheap compared to other PC components.

P.S. If you happen to be looking at aftermarket heatsinks anyway, the Hyper 212 EVO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099) is a very high value cooler, and if you want to go even bigger or better, the Noctua NH-D14 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608024) is a sort of legend in air cooling.
