I have a 19" viewsonic monitor which is connected to my desktop pc with a vga cable. My computer has an hdmi port. Can I connect my monitor to my computer using a vga to hdmi cable, will I need a converter box? Will the picture be any different than it is with the vga cable? Thanks.

Thank you so much for a quick and to the point answer.

Solution
To use the hdmi out, you'd need a converter box because hdmi is digital only and vga is analog only. Also, that's not likely to change your picture any, it's just a matter of whether the conversion from digital to analog is done by the video card or by an external box. If your monitor has hdmi input, doing hdmi to hdmi might be purer, since there'd be no conversion back and forth, but I'm not sure the difference would really be noticeable.

You REALLY don't' want to do that, as you would be messing with two different standards, as HDMI include the 'sound' carried over the connection as well as the Video but in a much HIGHER definition than a VGA connection. Most of the time 'converter connections' tend to be as expensive (because they are sold far and few between) but you can find like this one for $30

Your better solution (considering the old age of the monitor) you may wnat to consider a 23" for only $119 http://slickdeals.net/f/6754438-asus-vx238h-black-23-1ms-hdmi-led-tn-panel-monitor-129-ac-ar-fs-with-sr-iron-egg-ends-3-3-14 which would (going forward) last longer then a 'old' Vga monitor AND is usable not only on your PC but if you get any other device out there (BluRay, PS3, etc.).

Do you have a link to where I could buy a convertor box?

You need to read the ENTIRE thread. A link and price was provided, but it isn't worth the problems PLUS your about 1/2-1/3 the cost of a new LCD anway (some LCDs are as low as $49!!! the converter is 30).
