Why does my IP address not change when connected to VPN?

I can connect successfully to my work's VPN (using Cisco AnyConnect), but my ip address as reported by ipconfig doesn't change, and when pinging different computers, the route taken by the ping request is identical before, during, and after I'm connected to the VPN. I thought the whole point is that I'm supposed to appear to the internet at large as if I'm on the work network, for all intents and purposes.

What am I doing wrong or not understanding about VPN? I'm on Windows XP, but the same thing happens with Windows 7. Thanks for any help.

The ipconfig address will always stay the same. Now you might see the vpn client adapter and that will have a IP assigned from your company network.

In general the data path is forced though the vpn so if you would run a website like whatsmyip with the vpn down your should get something different than when it is up.

The most common vpn are setup to only allow you to be on your work network or the internet and not both at the same time. This is generally recognized as a good security policy. It does not HAVE to be setup that way though. This is in general is called split tunnel. Pretty much you can decide what goes gets forced into the company network and what gets sent out directly. You could if the company network was only private addresses route all the private ip blocks into the tunnel and let all public ip bypass the vpn and go directly.

It is strongly recommended by all security professionals you do not allow routing to both the internet and the corporate network because a skilled user...or a really stupid one... could allow a external person from the internet to gain access to the internal network via their machine.

This is a question for your IT guys as to how they set it up.
