I have downloaded the .iso for lubuntu. I then burned it onto a cd, because the computer doesn't recognize USB boots. When I turn it on(it has no os), the cd drive spins rapidly, and the screen shows a white cursor blinking in the corner. 10 seconds later, the fan goes on full, the cd derived stops spinning, and the cursor moves down a line. Any idea how to help?

Are you booting from the cd or just letting it go? It sounds like it's trying to boot from the HDD (but nothing's there)

Sorry if this sounds rude, but did you burn the CD correctly. You need to use a proper ISO-burning program (such as ImgBurn) rather than just copying the .iso file to the CD.

I have the BIOS set to boot from the cd drive, so yes, I am booting from the cd drive

I used the windows CD burner to do it. When I put the cd in it offered to burn files. I then dragged the ISO in and pressed burn

Not a proper burn then. Do as IJack suggested.

When you do it that way, I think it just burns the .iso to the disk instead of the contents packed into the .iso. You need to do as Ijack said and use something like imgburn to burn it to a disk.

Find an Ubuntu system and do it THIS way:

Yes the distinction is insane for usrland, but you don't make the rules.

Yes, that is the incorrect way to burn an ISO. ISO's aren't just any file - to make them bootable, they must be burned in a specific way. Grab a fresh CD, and put it in the drive of the computer you used to burn the other one.

In Windows 7/8:
1. Right click ISO file.
2. Select 'Burn disk image'. This is different to standard burning, and burns the contents of the ISO, not the ISO itself.
3. Use default options in the resulting window.
4. Click Burn (or Write)
5. Try to boot from it!

In windows Vista/XP:

1. Download and install http://www.freeisoburner.com/
2. Open it.
3. Select ISO via the program.
4. Click Burn.
5. Try to boot from it!

Did i miss your OS out? if so, what is your OS?
