Do I need a screen on a laptop to use a monitor?

As I asked in the title, would I need to connect a screen to a laptop in order to run it on an external screen (TV) or monitor? So basically I want to know if I need to connect something to the graphics card, in order to be able to run an external source of imaging. because the laptop I want to use has a broken screen, and I can't afford to replace the screen at the moment, so can I just remove the screen and use and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable to run imaging?

PS I am sorry if this is in the wrong section.

thanks for the answers both of you and all who post after, XxD34THxX gave the answer I was looking for, and was hoping for. If someone can bring evidence that states otherwise please do, I need to know.
