The best Price/Perf right now is probably the GTX 770 at ~$330. So you could fit 2 of those for under 700$.

Single card solutions right now for 550$ would be the GTX 780, AMD cards are having a price hike recently thanks to mining and would not be worth to pay the extra premium.

One GTX780 is about that much. And there are still a few R290 around at $550.

Really depends on your target resolution, settings, and performance.

get a gtx 770 with 4gb vram if you are looking to sli soon. For the single card, gtx 780ti would be the best for longer time and can sli later when you need it.

I would recommend a GTX 770 and you can SLI later. The R9 290 and 290x are incredible cards for the $ (@ retail) but its near impossible to find one now at a reasonable price.
