I have recently purchased a refurbished HP Z400 workstation spec:

Intel Xeon Quad Core W3550 - 3.06GHZ - Intel VT-x - Intel 64Bit - Hyper Threading12GB DDR3 RAMFactory integrated RAID on motherboard for SATA drives with RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10 capability
500GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
Nvidia Quadro FX1700 512MB Dual Screen DVI Graphics Card
Integrated Intel/Realtek HD ALC262 Audio
Integrated Broadcom 5764 PCIe LOM
DVD-Rom Optical Drive
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I wanted to upgrade the software to windows 8 pro 64bit so I acquired the required retail version (both 32 & 64). The upgrade assistant checked the system reporting a couple of minor problems that could be fixed later and I went ahead and installed the 64bit version. After installing the computer went into a repeating cycle of reporting an error, gathering the report restarting etc. After attempting the repair etc. No joy so I decided to do a clean install formatted the HD but this time the beginning instillation window just froze, white dots stopped spinning. I completed the same process with the 32bit instillation and it seemed to install ok until the end of the process when it went into the error cycle again at about 80% finalizing the instillation.

Not to be deterred I installed both 32bit & 64bit versions of the system on two hard drives in respective 32 & 64bit machines (performing full updates of the OS) and transplanted both in turn into the original machine. The 64bit would not start up but the 32bit after going through a couple of crashes eventually ran ok.

Unfortunately I need the 64bit version to run on this machine can anybody suggest how I can achieve this?

Thanks for your reply. I have tried installing with one stick with the same result. Also with different sticks in different slots to no avail!

The computer runs fine with 32bit windows 8 pro, and ran ok with windows 7 home 64bit. The memory reports fine but I have had 972 - Fatal error on DIMM in slot CPU0 DIMM1 screen pop up once during one of the many times I tried to install the 32bit version of 8 in the Z400. The current working instillation was initially done on a donor machine and transplanted into the Z400.

Can memory chips work fine under a 32bit environment but not a 64bit ? Is it likely to be a hardware fault, or is Windows 8 just too 'fussy' whilst it installs. Its worked Ok under Windows 7 64bit so what the hell is going on!

Yes, but you will not get maximum capacity. 32-bit only uses 4 or less GB Ram, where 64-bit uses it all. Meaning that if you have 12 GB of ram running with Windows 32-bit, only 4GB will be active and the rest 8 will do nothing.
