I have an HDTV, a cable box, and a blue ray dvd player. I want to connect all to a JVC 809vtn stereo receiver that does not have HDMI.

Of course it can be connected. Hook them all to the TV with HDMI. The TV will probably have an optical audio output. Buy a DAC like this:

and connect it to the TV and receiver.
