Hi all,
I'm having a problems with games randomly freezing and locking the whole PC up lately BSODing on occasion too. I think it's probably my video card a GTX 260 core 216. That or the motherboard :- / anyway I was looking to probably replace it for a minimal investment cause if I get a high end card and it's the mobo I'll be pissed. Would a R7 250 GDDR5 be a good choice or should I buck up a bit go with a GTX 660 instead? The GTX 260 has more memory bandwith than a lot of stuff I noticed but is that cause of architecture change mem bandwith performance is less important now?

Anyway my setup:
i7 920
corsair 12gb ddr3 1600
BFG GeForce GTX 260

Solution
Can you borrow another card to test out the bad graphics card theory?

Your GTX260 was a fine card in it's day.
But, it is barely an entry level card now.
A R7-250 would be about the equivalent, a $90 card.

I suggest you buy yourself a much stronger and more modern card.
Ignore specs such as bandwidth. That is all factored into the general performance rankings.
This hierarchy chart can be helpful.

At any price point, you will get fair performance for your money.
Do not anguish over close differences.

A GTX750 will be $120, a GTX750ti will be $160. GTX660 is good too.
If you can buy one with a return option, you can test out your motherboard with it.

One advantage to you of a nvidia card is that you will not have to deal with a graphics driver change.

PSU is Corsair 750w just put it in not too long ago. I don't want to put a lot into a card cause I'm not sure if the mobo could be going bad. That's an Asus P6T.The PS went three or so months ago and I put a new one in. Right after that a a stick of RAM died out sent that back to corsair and they gave me a 12 GB kit to replace my 6 gb kit :). It been going good now suddenly games freeze up the PC completely randomly. Although right before they same to stutter and FPS drops so I'm thinking it could be when the cards put under a load it's becoming unstable and probably dying.

That's so weird.. my dad had the complete same exact setup, except he had two in SLI. I also had an MSI 192 core GTX 260 and the 7850 was definitely a good upgrade.

Ya no cards I can swap with unfortunately :-( I'll have to check and see which places I can return to if that doesn't work good idea! Take a restocking fee hit but better than having a card sit around and collect dust. BTW maybe my eyes are going wacky but do you see the GTX 750's on the chart I can't find them?

I think they are close.
In general, you get fair value at every price point.
It is not that useful to chase minor differences.
They only can be detected with synthetic benchmarks, not in actual game play.

My general principle is to go with newer tech whenever possible.
Newer tech usually runs cooler with less power.
Over time, the drivers improve, and you will get better performance over the initial benchmarks.

I just feel that spending more on a card that you can "take with you" when/if an upgrade comes, will be the wiser choice. Your computer, as it stands now(assuming it still works), with a mild OC will perform very well with a GTX660 - 760. I'm very happy with my GTX 670 on my x58 mobo.

Edit: BTW you have a top notch psu - nothing holding you back there.
