Recently bought the parts for my friend to build me a nice desktop computer. I know how to work a computer but I don't know the inner workings of the computer. My friend however does. But were in the process of trying to run it and are unable to get any video out put. he knows hes installed everything correctly but is still rechecking everything just in case. Figured it may be worth asking with in the computer community if perhaps we over looked something simple. ill list all the componets purchased and then list the parts he gave me to use that were still supposed to be compatible.

Then he gave me 3 hard drives
one is a 640 and the other two are 280 not sure on their brand with out right beside me but he did say they were newer and they were compatible . I don't doubt my friend in the least, I've watched him build multiple computers and hes never had an issue. Can anyone suggest something that he hasn't thought about or is there something with any of those components that people regularly have an issue with? We cant get in to do bios, we cant even see anything on the monitor as it wont wake from sleep mode. Checked other forums and have seen posts about sticking the graphics card in a diff slot, putting the ram sticks in different slots and trying a different connector from the power supply on the power slot/pins/post/peg thingy near the cpu to give it the power needed. All that happens when we power up, the fans come on and the leds for the fans come on. no sounds no beeps nothing else. you cant here the drivers powering up or anything. Hopefully I put enough info in this post to receive some suggestions if any. Thank you for the help.

First of all that PSU is 100% trash, and could easily fail and fry the computer. What is this computer going to be used for?

You should replace the PSU with a 500w unit from Antec, XFX, Corsair, Seasonic.

The parts you listed are compatible. Do you have the monitor connected to the GPU or the motherboard? It is supposed to be connected to the GPU only.

All right now I know to keep my eye open for a better psu, I was trying to go with decent stuff for an economical rate. Didn't have a ton of money to buy everything I wanted, but I'm still happy with what I got. Its going to be used for some gaming, WoW, League, Minecraft etc. Otherwise I plan on use it for stuff like gimp and cinema to do animations and photoediting/texture building and what not. Nothing to strenuous. And the monitor is connnected to the graphics card, not the mother board. isnt even a vga on the motherboard for the connection my buddy said.

You will not be gaming on this computer. The GPU you have is about the lowest end one you can get. It is for adding video to a computer, using powerpoint, and basic video watching. IT WILL NOT play games past LOWEST settings at lowered resolutions and will struggle with 3d software. LoL will probably run at LOW and WoW will run at LOW at lower than 1080p resolutions.

Change the PSU ASAP.

Allright. Right now its better then my laptop im on currently. i can play those games but barely. I wanted a pc stronger then this lappy. So I went through and tried to find affordable componets better then what i have currently. Can you recommend a decent GPU that is still at an affordable price. ill try to upgrade the PSU and GPU as soon as I can. In the meantime though I would still like being able to use the computer being built. Any idea as to why were not getting any video output at all? I've seen a couple other forums with people having similar issues but there wasnt a clear solution to the problem. Were working on trying the other connectors/ pins to get it all to power up. nothing yet but we have 2 other connections to try stilll. what im lost on is that the PSU has 3 different ones. i have a 4+4 pin, a 6+2 pin, and a 6 pin. Which is confusing bc in its manual (online) it shows a 4+4 pin, 8 pin, and a 4 pin.....so were a little confused as to which to use, and of which all 3 on it are the colors it shows, but the one connection the 4+4 which is the only matching is showing a different color config then what the manual shows. (Manual says black on the inside yellow on the out) but the connector itself is black on the out, yellow on the in, even with the side clips on the yellow side making it impossible to flip around. Unless this was a simple fail to code it correctly. No idea, I'm just trying to stretch for possible problems/ideas/solutions/etc.

You will want to spend about $150 on a GPU to play modern games at a mix of medium and high settings. Something like a gtx660 or hd 7870.

I would not even try with that PSU. It could fry the computer. It is as low quality as it gets.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems here is a list of troubleshooting tips.

Does your laptop have intel graphics? If so, the GPU you have is BARELY better than it or not better at all.
