Worth to upgrade from i7 960?

Let me put down my current system specs first.

Cooler Master HAF 922
Asus ROG Rampage III Extreme
Intel 960 @ 3,8GHz
Scythe Mugen 2 rev. b
6GB Tripple channel DDR3-1333MHz (3x2GB)
MSI GeForce 260GTX Lightning Black Edition
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
1TB HDD
Corsair 750W PSU

I'm pretty sure the graphics card needs an upgrade, i thought i'd upgrade the motherboard and cpu aswell, but is it worth it?
I'm planning on going with an Asus Maximus Hero, i5 4670K or 4770K, MSI GTX 770, and 8GB DDR3-1600 (Corsair vengeance pro)

What will i be using my pc for?
I play games such as WoW and battlefield, and Assasins creed IV for now, but i'm definitly getting the newer games such as Thief, Watch Dogs and whatever i feel like buying at that moment.
I do work in DAW's and usually using a big library such as drum and orchestral samples.
I'm not sure if its the ram, but i feel like its loading a bit slow, other than loading samples, im using an asio driver to track instruments in real time such as guitar and midi drums.

Is it worth upgrading all of my pc or just the graphics card?
I do wanna be future proof and don't wanna upgrade within the first 3-4 years after buying a new rig with the exception of hdd/external hdd.

Thanks for the links, yeah i've done my research beforehand and i probably won't be using the hyperthreading feature.
4670k will be it. Do you think i should wait a year untill upgrading or will now be the right time?

Go ahead it is loking like at least 2015 before Broadwell-D so you should be safe to go ahead and do it.

Okay. I'm thinking of going with the Corsair Obsidian 750D, this because i like the look of the large window. Becuase of this i thought of going with the Corsair Hydro 100i. I will be overclocking the 4670k to around 4,3GHz just because i like to tweak around. So, will the 100i be safe to go with?
If i would go with that one, i would buy a pair of Corsair AF120's

You'd need to spend money on the Z series motherboard AND the cooling solutions, so you're better off going for a locked i7 4770.

AND an overclocked i5 can't beat even a i7 960 on multi-thread heavy tasks... It's a matter of architecture, rather than power.

Honestly, as of now, i don't plan on using any video editing program or CAD seriously. However, i do multitask alot. While running games, i do switch back to the desktop having multiple browser windows open and programs running in the background.

If multithreading wil help process those tasks faster and assuming i might get interested in video editing in the future, i'd like betting those extra 100 euros on a 4770k. If however the 4670k will do the job, id stick with that.

I'd personally choose the k over the regular 4770, this because i like to tweak and get familiar with overclocking this generation for my own experience.

I'm like you, I went for a Z87, i5 4670k combo with no custom cooling solution because I want to leave the door open. And turns out, I have a very nice chip: on the stock cooler, I get 4.5GHZ @ 1.265V, which is definitely above what the average chip will do. It's also a very cool CPU, from what I can tell, and won't go above 60C under stress tests.

Anyway, from what you're saying, the i7 doesn't seem to be a must have. The i5 is enough for gaming, almost as much as an i7 is enough. If the rest of your system isn't top of the line, no need to get a top of the line CPU. Multi-tasking will be absolutely fine with an i5.

Honestly, your CPU usage won't go beyond 40% nearly as often as you might thing. It's just a beast of a CPU.

4.5GHz and 60C at 1.265V under stress is very nice, hope i will get one of those "lucky" chips, haha. What cooler are you using? You don't mean those intel stock coolers, do you?

With my 960 i won't be hitting the 10% often when idle, it stays for about 4% untill i open more browsers and programs. < Thats measured with windows task manager. When stressed it does get hot though.

Anyway, if i were to buy the msi gtx 770 (2GB) first, leaving the rest of my pc as it currently is, will the i7 960 hold back the gtx 770? Because, i'd like to use it meanwhile, while saving up money for the rest.

I meant 60C at stock, not on overclock. 4.5GHz on the stock cooler is basically undoable. The CPU will reach 90C+ when stressed for a little while. But it's stable on windows, at 30C or something like that.

As for the 770, it will go fine with your i7. It's a great CPU even by today's standards. Much thanks to AMD's inability of producing something decent, but anyway, it will do fine.

Smart choice on the 2GB front also. The 770 isn't strong enough to take advantage of the 4GB VRAM on the 4GB version.
