Running hard drive off a laptop

I have a desktop dell computer running WinXP. It is a dimension3000. Can I take the HD out of the computer and connect it to a laptop as an external drive?

Will the XP install from the Dell work and boot connected via USB to the laptop? No.
Can you use it as am external drive? Yes.
