Hello all,

I recently received a computer from a friend who believes it to be scrap. I took it home, connected it, hit the power button, and was amazed to see that it turned on.

Turns out however, it couldn't go past the first screen which reads:

Intel(r)915G/915GV/g10GL PCI Accerlerated SVGA BIOS
Build Number: 3402 PC Dev 08/23/2004 13:03:07
DECOMPILATION OR DISASEMBLY PROHIBITED

Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery...
Checking for floppy...
Floppy not found!
Checking for CD-ROM...
CD-ROM not found!
<this repeats indefinitely>

**Note that during this time, my keyboard does not work and I cannot hit any keys to bring me anywhere else.**

I opened up the computer and quickly noticed that there wasn't a hard drive inside. Thinking this was likely the problem, I connected a spare hard drive of mine containing a Windows 7 installation. I hit the power button again, but the screen read the same as before.

I did a bit of research and saw a suggestion on taking out the CMOS battery for 5 minutes, then replacing with a new one. Tried that and got the same result.

The computer is a Compaq Presario SR1430NX.

A chip on the motherboard reads: ASUS A8000 D0440 A2L1410 8H110732A (but I can’t find any information of this type online).

My next course of action is to try burning a disk with a BIOS recovery file. But I want to hold off on that until I hear back from the community. Will this even work or is it worth a shot? Where can I find a BIOS Recovery file?

Does anyone have any suggestions to help?

Go to HP web site and find bios file and user guide

Usually you put bios file on floppy disk or CD or USB menory stick and rename file to something like BIOS.BIN
or what ever it states in the instructions

boot up with disk in place and bios will be re flashed

before doing this check cmos battery voltage usually a lithium 3 volt button cell.
if it is less than about 2.5V repace it immediately

If less than 2.9V replace if flashing bios suceeds

You will need hardware drivers from HP site to Install Windows if the PC is usable

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I went on the HP website and located my computer model (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=459491). There is only one file listed for BIOS --> "PTGD-LA/PTGD1-LA/PTGD2-LA Motherboard BIOS Update".

Is this the correct file to burn onto a disk? Can I burn it on a DVD-R? Or does it need to be on a CD-R? I don't know what to rename it and there doesn't seem to be a user guide/instructions on what to rename it.

Thanks again.

I have the same problem on my HP w5170.pt (Motherboard PTGD-LA),

bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery...
Checking for Floppy...
Floppy not Found!
Checking for CD-ROM...
CD-ROM not found!

I change battery on the motherboard, but not resolve.
