Hi, I'm looking to build a PC for around $900 USD. It will be used for gaming and school so I'll need word, power point, etc. as well as windows 8.

Solution
Lets not force you to do that :) This build below would game pretty well, but it goes over budget a bit because office:

If I cut out the OS and Office is it a good 800$ build?

I don't see why not. Overall it's pretty good. If you're looking at bf4 benchmarks an i5 and 760 gets 35-60 fps at all times on high, which is pretty good. Right now I feel like that's one of the most demanding games out there. SSD is better than HD but who's going to pay that premium when a harddrive at 7200 rpm and 6 gb/s is in the build? No-one. Overall this builds pretty solid and moderately energy efficient, I like to save on the electricity, and will get you through for now, But I just realized you should probably do this mobo+cpu combo instead:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($124.99 @ Amazon)
for future proofing... That goes for you to FoxyGrandpa. The reason is for future proofing

I'll try to give you a quick explanation and maybe tell you a little why I hate Intel sometimes. Okay so the processor chip has to be compatible with its spot on the motherboard. The processor(CPU as I'll call it) has to have the same socket as the motherboard(Mobo as I'll call it). Well the one I had before was an older version of an Intel socket, the lga 1155, and the two new parts are lga 1150, the newer socket, Which basically means when you decide(If ever) that this CPU no longer has enough power, you have more upgrade opportunities because it's on a newer version. There's really not much of a performance boost, it just means that it might save you the cost of buying a new MOBO in the future. (OH and the reason I hate Intel a little is because I feel like they change sockets to much). It's more versatile for t he same price and performance.
