they pretty much just go down the scale, they are rebranded 7xxx series with performance enhancments
290x/290=7970
280x/280=7950
those are the 2 i know i dont know about the 270x i think it is a 7870 rebrand but not 100% positive
as for the x denominators
x series=higher clocks
non x series= standard/slight oc
hope this helped

this is one of the new graphics cards from amd. "new" as in model number and clockrates, but the card is based on amd's older pitcairn gpu from radeon hd 7870.

the 8000 series model numbers were given to oem graphics cards. oem model numbering is even more confusing than mainstream ones. all i can say is that they're a mix between re-numbered current gpus and some others.

not all of them.

r9 290x is based on amd's entirely new gpu codenamed hawaii, with enhancements over existing gcn architecture based gpus. r9 290 is a cut-dow version of r9 290X. radeon hd 7970 has a different gpu with different design, uarch and configuration.

r9 280 hasn't come out yet, only r9 280x is available. 280x is based on the older tahiti gpu (7970) with minor tweaks. radeon hd 7950 has fewer shaders than r9 280x.

it is based on the gpu from 7870 with minor clockrate tweaks and firmware.

not exactly. x suffix usually denotes a card higher in the performance and configuration hierarchy not just clockrate. although, amd, in typical attempt to confuse customers, has made exception to their own model numbering. it's better to look into the specs themselves and study independent reviews.
