Samsung X125 drops useable ram to 766mb despite recognising 3Gb

My laptop suddenly dropped it's performance over the weekend to basically unusable but I'm not sure why. Possibly a ram chip has died (it has two) DIMMs but windows system is showing 3Gb (766mb useable) and windows task manager also only showing 766Mb under performance. From other searches it seems like 258Mb might be the video/graphics card but missing two more Gb or at least having something between 2.5Gb and 3Gb is necessary.

Any ideas on how I can get windows to check if the ram is healthy, attached, etc? Only thing I can think of is to reseat the chips and possibly try a few bios things but no certainty.

Bios shows two DIMMs, one is 1024, the other 2048.

You can test the RAM modules with memtest86: http://www.memtest.org/

Download the ISO CD-image and create a CD from it using IMGBURN: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Boot your laptop from the CD and Memtest will run automatically. Any RAM errors should appear within the first four or five passes. To stop Memtest press the <Esc> key.

Test each of the two modules separately (ie remove one) otherwise you won't know which one, if any, is faulty.

Thanks for the reply, I gave this a shot via Bootable USB and it seemed to come up as fine. Checking further it seems as though the issue isn't the RAM being connected but somehow being stuck as 'Hardware Reserved'.

I've tried to remove software related to hardware that I've added recently (I think it's just a Lexmark multi-function X4580 I was given), the rest should be fine unless Adobe Acrobat Pro is known to cause such issues?

Can't find anywhere (BIOS or otherwise) where I can get an idea what is reserving the RAM or how to release it. Also tried RAMMap and going into MSConfig > Boot > Advanced Options > Maximum Memory to be unchecked (shows full 3Gb when checked).

Going to try and load screenshots of ResourceMonitor and Memtest but taking an age to sort images on this.

Cheers
