Hi my laptop was freezing during its os startup so I formatted the hard disk and tried to reinstall windows 7 but it did the same thing when i booted from the windows 7 os dvd. I tried using a copy of linux to see if it was a virus but it also froze on startup. So to confirm whether it was a hard disk problem, I took the hard disk out and tried to boot from os dvds but it did the same thing. I also ran a ram test and no errors popped up. So that leaves the motherboard. Is there anything else i could do with the bios to fix this or would i have to get a new motherboard?

By the way laptop isnt showing blue screen its just freezing at windows logo.

Could be overheating. It's a little tricky cleaning the heatsink in a laptop with canned air because you need to make sure that the fan doesn't spin while your hitting it with compressed air.

Is this laptop under warranty?

Unfortunately its not under warranty. I'm way past the date. Is there any kind of manual I can look at to do this?

When you say BIOS update, you don't mean that you are actually updating the firmware, you mean while your in the BIOS right?

You don't want to be updating your BIOS (meaning you've downloaded a new BIOS from the manufacturer's website and writing it to the CMOS) if you laptop is unstable. An unfinished BIOS update will leave your computer dead.

If you just mean that it crashes while your in the BIOS, then that really makes me think that it's overheating.

Who makes you laptop and what exact model is it? In most cases you can find a service manual online (not usually from the manufacturer though) and this will tell you how to get your laptop apart so you can clean the heatsink and fan assembly. It would also allow you to check to make sure the heatsink retention mechanism is holding the heatsink assembly securely on the CPU / GPU.

The other thing it could be is bad RAM. However I've never heard if causing crashes in the BIOS. Usually it'll either not boot at all, or it will randomly crash, either during boot up or in Windows. But we shouldn't rule it out. How many SO-DIMM's are in your computer? If you have more than one (or your computer has some RAM built right on the motherboard), you could try removing one stick then the other. Or in the case of having some on the motherboard, remove it all. If you get it to boot with a stick or sticks removed then you've found your problem.

If you can answer these questions for me, we can proceed.

Here is a more full explanation. I put on a forum.

Hi. I'm working on my laptop which is freezing on startup. I formatted the hard disk to sort this but found that it wasnt the problem when i removed it from the laptop and rebooted with windows 7 and linux os dvds and saw it still freezing. Its not even blue screening, its just freezing at the very first windows logo and not moving. Is there any way I could sort this? I've also tried updating the bios, but nothing changed. My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E525) is void of warranty.

Hi thankyou. The other laptop specs are
Type: 1200-2JG
ID: 12002JG

I think theres a few more things I should say. It belonged to my brother and he recently gave it to me. He just told me that he had it sent in for repairs some months back for the same issue and the technician said that it was a motherboard issue. So he paid for the motherboard to be replaced and it was working again. Now, not even a full year later its doing the same thing. I have no idea what could have caused this to happen both times.

I've run a check disk on the hard drive and it found no errors. I've also tried booting the laptop without the hard drive by removing it from the laptop and using windows 7, and xp install cds to boot.

This should have booted into an install windows screen and after a bit of looking it should have given me the option to show the available drives that the os could be installed on and because I removed the hard drive it should have shown me nothing. However, it kept freezing at the windows logo. So it couldn't have been the hard drive.

Ive also tried a different stick of ram from a new laptop and there has been no change.

So its not the RAM and its not the Hard drive. All suggestions are appreciated.

its stopping just as these screens begin to show. Note that these pictures are not my laptop. I'm just using them to show where my laptop freezes up.

I've also only just found that when I put a cd into the internal optical drive and try to boot from it, the laptop says cmos checksum bad and gives me option to continue (f1) or to enter setup (f2). However, when I use external cd reader, it works fine until it hangs of course (the issue I started this thread for).

I've also cleaned out the fan.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

With it freezing in BIOS, Windows Installation, Linux Boot CD, it certainly sounds like it's overheating.

When its on can you hear the fan or feel air coming from the exhaust?

Here is a link to the manufacturers site with the hardware manual (I haven't downloaded it myself, I'm on a slow satellite connection) it should describe how to get to the point where you can inspect the fan and heatsink.

Manual Link

If you are not comfortable doing this, you may want to take it to a computer shop and have them do some checks on it.
