My dad wants to buy a new PC for audio editing/mixing and other stuff. He wants an Intel Pentium dual core g2030 3gh with 8gb of ram, but it's a little bit expensive with intel CPUs. I suggested him to buy AMD CPUs 'cause they're cheapr and faster and he said I'm not sure if AMD is compatible with Avid Pro Tools. So will, for example, the AMD A4 5300 3.4gh work well with Avid Pro Tools?

I am not very familiar with that software honestly but there is no hardware reason that CPU shouldn't work. based on this site though:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/en365919?popup=true

It will be fairly under powered for the task and take some time to complete.

Why does your father not want quad core or hyper threading? an older dual core is a strange request for such a high end piece of software.
If it must be that this would be the best CPU that meets those requirements.

It's becaused quad cores or dual core hyper-threated are 50euros more expensive and it is also because avid pro tools are more optimized for apple computers, and apple computers use intel processors. I don't see any post proving that MAD processors work
for avid pro tools 10hd and on the system requirements it says intel processors supported and more specific: i7 or dual i7, xeon or dual xeon and stuff. went to search in yahoo, bing and google and nothing proves pro tools work for AMD processors.

AMD processors can run any program that Intel can there is no difference in the instruction sets. Intel are recommended because of their better single threaded performance. For editing though you want the fastest CPU with the most cores you can afford. That is why the Xeons and i7 are listed they are about the best you can get.

I have Protools HD 10 on a core 2 Duo and it runs like crap once you get a few tracks and plugins. But, it runs great on my i5 laptop (2 cores Hyperthreading to make 4 threads) and great on my buddies i5 (4 physical cores=4 threads) AS LONG AS I LEAVE IT ON 3 THREADS and leave one for background windows crap (you can control this all in protools settings). So I guess my point is you need a processor with at least 4 threads whether it be 4 physical cores or a dual core with hyperthreading. All the processors I used are within 0.3 Ghz of each other and if I added or removed threads it started glitching. So the Two processors you named would be nearly unusable in the $600 protools program. I would bite the bullet and go for an i5. Or if you go for and AMD go for broke and get the fx-8350.
And as far as the AMD or intel part, I have heard a few people say it works fine on an AMD chip but I have no experience with it. I would rather go with AMD myself for budget but from what I've heard Avid only "supports" intel and if you run it on an AMD chip they will not give you any support, you are on your own with your expensive program. The software itself is $600 I think you can fork over a couple hundred bucks to get an i5 since it is the soul of the entire program.
