I am trying to Squeeze a bit more life out of my old q9450. It seems like a pretty simple overclock and I can't figure out why it isn't working; I have managed to overclock it to 3.45 ghz on 1714 fsb, 1.44 Volts on NB, 1.35v on the cpu core and 1.3v on vtt. Default clocks, voltages and timing on my memory and it posts and boots up completely without issue but when I play games it crashes after about 5-15 minutes. I have a huge ass Enermax fan and the CPU never goes over 55 degrees C.

Specs

CPU: q9450
Mobo: xfx nforce 750i
GPU: xfx Nvidia 260 x2
Ram: Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066
PSU: XFX 850 Watts

Every chip has a limit.
It depends on your luck of the binning.
Your 30% OC seems very good to me.

Try stress testing using OCCT.
If you can run stable under stress, you should be able to run games.

Your cpu is 6 years old.
You paid over $300 for it.
A simple i3-4130 @ 125 will outperform it.
A i7-4770k @300 or so will be 3x more capable.
Perhaps it is time to upgrade?

Sorry, yeah I forgot to mention that I've tweaked it up and down from 1714 to 1650 to 1600 (for some reason 1600 dosent post at all) all of which produce the exact same problem. I've also tried useing slower clocks and looser timings on my memory. I've also tried lots of different voltages up to 1.4v on the cpu core and 1.51v on nb. All settings run at very low temps but give me the exact same problem.

Yeah It probs is time for an upgrade its just that I don't realy game as much anymore and I'd have to do a whole system upgrade because there are new slots and everything, I couldn't realy justify the price.

If you are not gaming or running cpu intensive apps, why bother working for a higher overclock?

From a everyday performance point of view, I suggest buying a SSD for the "C" drive.
It will be one of the most satisfying upgrades you will ever make.

Yeah this (ssd) plus a fresh install of windows will do you wonders for general system performance.

Oh no, I am gaming, just not enough to justify buying a new pc. Gaming is why I'm overclocking it, Mainly for EverQuest 2 because it is particularly CPU intensive.

You can back up your overclock to a more stable state, I think that is the only option you've got at the moment if you are not planning to upgrade. Quite frankly, the only valid upgrade from your current rig would be an i5. You can get a i5-3550p +ASRock B75M-GL R2.0 motherboard+a 2x4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 kit for about 325 $ and it will be an upgrade you won't regret.

If I do that I will have to buy new memory and a new graphics or the whole system would bottleneck, it would be completely pointless. I'm not asking whether or not I should upgrade. I'm not going to. Stick to the question I asked please.

As I've already stated I've already backed up the clock to multiple FSBs. I've stress tested for an hour on OCCT with no errors but I still get the exact same problem in games.
