I will soon be reinstalling Windows 7 as I am installing a new motherboard, cpu.

My current Windows installation is 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium installed from a upgrade disk I bought and installed over 64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium OEM. Will there be a problem when trying to reactivate Win 7.

Do I need to do a complete reformat, reinstall the Win Vista then use the Win 7 upgrade disk again to get back to my current OS ? I'm not sure what the situation will be since the old Vista was a OEM but the upgrade disk was bought separately. I still have the old Vista boxed OS if needed.

Hopefully new parts will be here tomorrow so I can get started.

Thanks

The OEM license is tied to the first motherboard it is installed on can cannot be transferred to a new one except in the case of failure where the replacement is of the same make/model. The upgrade invalidated the original Vista license. You can try activating on the new hardware but understand that Microsoft is under no obligation to allow you to reuse your OEM license on what is essentially a new PC.

So if the old OEM from vista is no longer valid I am now working on the Win 7 upgrade licence. I'll need to hope for the person at the end of the phone at MS is in a good mood when I tell them my old motherboard is dead and hope they will allow the transfer. Failing that its a trip to the computer store for Windows 8 retail
