i need to get a wired connection to my ps4. the modem is in another room and having wires down the hall is out of the question. would i get a faster connection with connecting the powerline directly to the modem? or should i buy a fast router and connect that to the modem and then connect the powerline to the new router?

Solution
Then it's already a router. A 'faster' router won't make things faster.

If you can't run a Cat5e cable, then powerline directly from that router to your location.
However.....the powerline thing is very dependent on the condition of the house wiring. It might be OK, it might suck.

Is your current 'modem' only a modem, or a modem+router?
How many LAN ports are on the back?
