Overclocking FX-8320 with Asus M5A97 R2.0?

So I was just wondering how well I'm going to be able to OC my fx-8320 on my mobo. Pretty cheap mobo, wasn't really intending to OC when I built the system, but my mind has changed :p

Also, I still need to get an aftermarket cooler. A lot of people seem to recommend the CM Hyper 212 Evo. I've also heard many great things about the NH-D14, but it's a lot more money. Wondering if there'll be a noticeable performance difference between the two?
Wouldn't mind a closed loop cooler, but I dunno if the radiators would work well in my case (antec 300).
Also, is it worth buying thermal paste separate tot the cooler, or just using the stuff that comes with it?

I've had a 4350, 6300, 6350, 8320 and 8350 all break 5 Ghz on an M5A97 R2.0.

They are solid boards for the money.

The Hyper 212 is great CPU cooler on a budget. However, the NH-D14 is one of the best air coolers on the market. The closed loop coolers are also quite decent now (H80 or better).

As for the thermal compound. I have been using Arctic MX-2 for a while, it is good stuff and typically does provide better temps than the standard stuff that comes with most things.

that board will overclock that chip a bit. it will be limited by your case airflow and cpu cooler though. Good airflow over the mosfet and northbridge cooling and you might be able to get 4.8 out of that board. standard airflow and you'll likely top out around 4.6 or 4.4...

as for a cpu cooler, a little discussed fact about those 8 core monsters is air coolers aren't good enough to get you a great overclock. The hyper evo will likely be topped out around 4.4 (or lower if it's a hot chip) that noctua might get you to 4.8, though i doubt it. you probably will never get over the piledriver voltage wall with it (at around 4.6-4.8ghz the voltages needed to increase clock speeds increase dramatically, then level out... the people who can get to 5.0ghz are the people who can get over that voltage wall with their cpu cooling; air coolers almost never can manage it on the 8 cored piledrivers). I would suggest a 240mm radiator closed loop cpu cooler like a h100 or h100i.

that's not a stable 5.2ghz... you're talking to a guy with a lot of experience with piledriver cpus. Unless that's a one in a thousand you'd need vcore set to 1.5+ to stabilize any overclock over 5.0ghz

I also doubt you were able to successfully run a stress test at that voltage and core speed. That said, i believe your Phanteks PH-TC14PE could keep a piledriver functional through a stress test at 1.45v... very believable and achievable. though i'm willing to bet the ghz of that chip is closer to 4.6-4.8 at those voltages.

Thanks! Would you say that the performance increase from a higher overclock with the h100i, is worth the jump in price from the 212 evo, as I'm not really looking for the complete maximum overclock?

Would you say that the NH-D14 is worth the price, or for a novice like me, is the 212 evo is good enough?

I'm not rich, so atm the 212 evo is looking most attractive.
 


ah... depends... see i found my 8320 went from feeling like an AMD cpu to feeling like an intel cpu at around 4.8-5.0ghz of course i'm a bit sensitive to it cause i work with a lot of high end intels and amds... and rationally i think i'm probably imagining it... but it seems like everything was a little faster and snappier when i got the chip up to 5.0



if you're happy with a 4.2ghz-4.5ghz overclock the 212 will be good enough.

5Ghz!, Uh mate, not always. Saying that will fry VRM's and damage your motherboard in most cases, as still that Asus motherboard is good for 970 chipset based overclokcing, but is still poor when it comes to all round OC, especially for 8-Core CPU's.

4.3GHz is fine, your Cooler and motherboard will take that but sometimes you can get bad motherboards, and with that may become an issue.

The issues with 970 chipstes are;

Poor VRM's/VRU's and VRU heatsinks, the 970 boards were never really designed for overclocking, but for under 43.Ghz, I am happy to agree to that.
 


yes it is. That motherboard is one of the best overclocking boards around, that Voltage is fine, and it certainly is stable!

Ish I am aobut to buy this board and cpu for a streaming rig i am putting together. I intend to OC it purely bc I can. I am not an expert in the subject as I have onl ever done it once before to my i5. I havent even touched an AMD processor since the Athalon One days.

Can you post a screen cap of the stuff I need to turn on and off in the BIOS please so I can not burn my cpu to the ground? I am going to use an Evo 212 cooler and am really only aiming for a 4.2-4.4 GHz OC nothing extravagant just for fun really.

Any of the Vishera CPU's should be easy to get to 4.2 - 4.4Ghz just by changing the multiplier. You might have to add more voltage but it shouldn't be much. It honestly should be fairly simple. I will try to get bios screen shots when I have time.
