Recover data from dying external HDD

Hello, yesterday I backed up all my data (music, movies, photos, work etc.) to an external hard drive in order to recreate partitions on my computer's HDD (my SSD is my C drive, the HDD was an extra storage drive).

Today, I came to copy the files back to my computer and it was extremely slow. After a while it simply stopped. I read about a program called Crystal Disc Info so I downloaded it., and it tells me that my 1TB external HDD is dying. If I can work out how to upload a screenshot of the program I will do so.

My question is: I have about 500GB of data on the drive which cannot be copied back to my PC, so is there any way for me to force the files to move from the dying HDD?

Thanks a lot for your time!

Thanks for your reply; here's what it comes up with. I've noticed now that the drive has gone from 'caution' to 'bad'. I hope this is what you were looking for (it makes no sense to me!) :

01 __1 __1 _51 000000008243 Read Error Rate
C5 _99 _99 __0 000000000139 Current Pending Sector Count

The normalised value of the Read Error Rate (1) has dropped below the threshold (51). This means that the drive is about to fail, if it hasn't failed already.

The raw value of the Current Pending Sector Count is telling you that there are 313 (= 0x139) bad sectors that are waiting to be replaced with good spares.

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x139+in+decimal

You might have better luck if you remove the drive from its enclosure and attach it directly to a SATA port inside your computer, but probably not. :-(

BTW, the drive is a Samsung model that has been rebadged by Seagate.

If you are not willing to engage professional data recovery services, then remove the drive from its enclosure and hook it up to your SATA port. If you can get it to spin up and be recognised, then leave it running and use a tool such as ddrescue to make a sector-by-sector clone. Ddrescue understands how to work around bad sectors. It also keeps a log so that it can resume after an interruption.
