Hello,
I have an alienware i740Q with 460M Nvidia Card, whats the best upgrade to boost performance and quality. i was thinking about 580m but im not sure.

Solution
From what I could find it would overheat on the stock cooling.
The ones I did find had part of the bottom cut and an extra fan ,or on some 2 fans mounted to the bottom of the laptop for extra cooling. Otherwise it will overheat and throttle down. But that kind of takes away from the portable aspect of having a laptop.

The 6970 is a drop in replacement. Anything faster or newer would require cooling modifications.
Going from a GTX 260 to a GTX460m or ATI 6970m is a big upgrade. Both are plug in with no modifications needed.
If you want to try more it is a risk you will have to take. I can post links to mods and information if you decide you want to take the risk.

it is very hard to upgrade a laptops graphics card it is not like desk tops, the chips are soldered to the mobo. you also have to make sure it is compatible with the mobo. you can google the make of your mobo or contact alienware to see if you can upgrade that laptop.

Thank you for putting some time to reply to this post. Ive done some research regarding the upgrade and Dell says the 7000 series would be a good fit for an upgrade 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7970M Dell that is. Only side effect it will over heat. Im not totally sure yet.

it also depends on the clearance of the heatsink you would need to apply to the graphics chip and they are soldered to the mother board, here is a video to what you would be getting into

also if it is compatible you also have to look at your power supply adapter as it will need to be larger and you would have to upgrade the some components on the mobo as your laptop is original rated to handle this type of card. even if you get it setup perfectly you have to worry about heat and damage to the mobo and the parts are pretty hard to find
