Hi,

I've been attempting to fix a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 that was in an HP Workstation. The drive seems to be affected by a problem that has been reported for a few years, but it's hit my brother-in-law's system just a week or so ago.

I've been following a repair guide and I can get nearly all of the way through it, but have not been completely successful. Perhaps the symptoms will help?

The guide is here:
https://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix

I have seen several references to this guide and there are others on the network.

I can get through the guide until after:

F3 1>N1 (enter)

After that, the guide says to reboot the drive. After that, however, I never am able to recover the prompt that would allow me to type in the next command:

F3 T>m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 (enter)

Clearly I can communicate with the drive, but not, it seems when the heads are engaged. I have cleaned the pads on the PCB.

Any ideas? I'm hopeful our friend fzabkar is around.

You are correct, yes.

However, I have news to report: The data is recovered.

Hi,

I am pleased to report that I've had success and the data is recovered.

There is one thing I did differently this time, which is I did NOT restart the drive after N1. Instead, I backed out to /T then ran the m0 command.

Beyond that, there was one other thing: When I ran the command to spin up the drive on the last attempt, I got a failure. I sent a spin down command and re-ran spin up. That time worked and, what's more, I heard the drive come up differently. I ran N1 then the m0 command and it worked. The drive showed up in Windows and I created an Acronis image.

So, a success!
