I am building a computer and for the harddrive I want to put in a 80gb SSD for the operating system and a 2-3tb Hybrid for everything else. Now currently I have a regular windows tower. I am wondering If I can buy the SSD put it in the windows tower I currently own and then download the operating system off of the windows homepage and put it on my current computer and install it on the ssd from there or do I have to buy the disk to install it on the ssd?

You can indeed download Windows legally from a few sites like Digital River, and install it by burning it to a dvd or creating a bootable flash drive - but you will only have 30 days to activate it with a valid product key/license. If you already have windows the current license may or may not work for you. OEM & upgrade versions of win7 and earlier are licensed to the one motherbd and are not transferable to a new system while Full Retail editions can be transferred. Win8 changed the rules and upgrade versions are now transferrable, OEM is still not.
