you will need a big power supply and i dont know if you are looking for preformance pre watt.the 2 gpus will consume nearly 600 wats on load only the gpus.

280's in crossfire is clearly FAR more compute power. how it would perform in real world is harder to say. Motherboard permitting (dual x8 3.0) i would say the 280x.

Single GPU is better than dual GPU. Dual GPU setup runs hotter, draws more power, and some games will produce microstuttering or will not work properly in SLI/Crossfire configuration. Yes two R9 280X can edge on 780Ti, but it is not worth it.

i also lean towards one card, and aside from the truth in the massive power draw AMD cards have over nvidia cards, the real world performance doesnt always match the numbers. the 280X in Xfire would only be better 'sensible' option is rare circumstances. on a liquid cooled block with 14K resolution monitor, possible eyefinity, kinda situation.

Realistically though the 780ti makes more sense, assuming single monitor gaming at 720-1080p.

The AMD cards are massively overpriced as of right now and it might be just better paying for a single 780 Ti ~$700 rather than ~$900 for the current 280X.

where have you been looking, the prices for a 280x are no where near that, i picked up a sapphire 280x toxic for £250 ($420)
