pretty straight forward question. This server is for a home office and it will be in a production/business environment (not heavily used though). I was thinking of using the internal USB slot for the flash drive and then using the HDD's for the datastore. I'll have a backup flash drive taped to the main drive so I just flip it around and plug it in should the USB drive fail.

The one question I have is why are there 2 internal USB ports but they make the one totally inaccessible with a plastic mounting bracket.

Is there any benefit to installing the hypervisor on the hard drives besides redundancy and a faster boot time by a few seconds?

Try not to complicate things if you don't have to. In this case, I would stick with a single storage solution. HDDs seem like a better option than the USB flash drive because you don't know the true speed of the flash memory on that USB drive, and you also get redundancy options like RAID which is usually good for "production" environments.

That's likely a USB 2.0 port on the 2950, and as such, will greatly reduce the speed of anything going over it in comparison to your DAS (Direct Attached Storage). So stick with the HDDs.
