Hi there,

My girlfriend has an old Optiplex 745 USFF. Unfortunately, the integrated graphics only supports shader model 2.0, and we would like to play games together (Nothing too graphically intensive). Obviously this is quite difficult given that a lot games nowadays use at least shader model 3.0.

I'm fairly competent with computers, but as this is a USFF it requires more specialised components, and I'm willing to suggest I don't have the requisite experience to choose accurately. Obviously the best case scenario would be to have a dedicated graphics card running, but I'm not sure whether that is possible. At the least we're hoping to find a compatible motherboard with a reasonable integrated graphics card to go along with it, so that these games will at least work. We're also willing to replace other components besides the motherboard if it proves necessary.

And it is with that that I come to you for help. We would like to find a motherboard that is compatible with her components as far as possible, and not spend too much money in the process. If applicable, we'd also like to have the option of upgrading to Windows 7 in the future.

The specs of her computer are as follows:
OS: Windows XP Professional
Model: Dell Optiplex 745 USFF
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 (clocked at 2.13GHz)
RAM: 2GB 667 MHz (1*2GB stick)
Chipset: Q965 (ICH8) Express Chipset
Graphics: Intel GMA 3000
PSU: 220W External Power Brick

If any other information or clarification is required, I would be happy to try and supply it.

Sincere thanks for your time and consideration,

Doc

Oh right you are. I'm afraid our budget doesn't really stretch to replacing the computer entirely, as we were hoping to find some parts second hand. For the time being, it looks like we're stuck with it. Thanks for your reply anyway, you were very helpful.
