How to tell if my product key is valid? Re-installing Windows 7?

Hello,

I tried re-installing Windows 7 to factory settings because I was getting an eror that made my screen go black and said "No Operating System Found."
I still have my sticker with my Windows 7 product key, but no installation disk. My husband found a copy of an installation sick online, and we used that burned copy, but it never asked me for my product key when I installed windows and now I'm getting that "Operating System Not Found" Error again.
My laptop is a SONY VAIO. Any info as to how I can check if my product key is still valid (never used it aside from when purchased VAIO) and what the cause of the error is and how to go about fixing it?

To me it sounds like the your laptop isn't booting from the Hard Drive, can you try going into the bios and setting the Hard Drive as the primary boot Device
