Safe to remove HDD from external drive bay?

So I had finished building my very first homebuild. The case came with an external 3.5" drive bay. I'm wondering if it's safe to remove my HDD from the external drive bay while the computer is running, or is it like a USB device; where I have to eject the hardware from the system tray.

You should eject it to prevent data corruption.

Okay, how do I do that? I don't see anything in the system tray, nor do I see any option for it when I right click on G: in the computer window.

Is the drive bay connected via USB, or some other interface, eg eSATA?

Right click on the drive in Computer (used to be called My Computer), if attached via USB you should be able to select eject.

No, it's not connected via USB, it's hooked up to the sata connector in my external hard drive reader on the front of my computer.

Was the drive configured as a "hot swap" device? If not, you can't eject it or remove while the system is operating.

No, I never configured it as a hot swap device.

Then you can only remove it when the system is powered down. Otherwise, you are likely to corrupt your system.
