Greetings Friends! I just need some information regarding the stock power plans in Win 7.

I use a powerful performance built desktop PC (running Win 7 64 bit Home Premium) for one specific and often demanding task (composing / recording / producing music).

When doing this task I run the PC in High Performance mode. When doing anything else, like updating, installing software, defragging, eating a sandwich, and when powering off (and consequently when powering on) I set it to the Balanced power plan.

Right now I only use the PC for a few hours a day, several more on weekends, and sometimes not for a week at a time.

I do this manual switching between power plans because, though necessary to run in High Performance mode for my work, it seems pointless to have it running full throttle for anything else I use it for, which isn't anything beyond or unrelated to making music and general upkeep.

Is what I'm doing good practice? I generally like to think doing this saves both energy and the life of my hardware. But I confess I don't really know, or if I really ever need to shut off High Performance mode at all. Am I doing any good, or even any harm by manually managing my power plan?

Thanks!
