Hi, I have an Iomega 2tb external drive and the read/write speeds are incredibly slow, and it takes a long time for the files to even how up once I open a folder on the drive. I am running on a macbook pro retina and my other drives have been performing well. I am using firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter and it works well with my other firewire drives but not this one. The drive is almost full and I'm guessing this may be something to do with it. But how do I get the files off of it or is there something else I can do to speed it up?
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Are you wanting to move the files to another external drive? Are these files you use on a regular basis? I only ask because one option might be to compress the files you rarely use to recover some of the disk space. If the files are highly compressed video files then compression probably won't make much of a difference. If you want to move them to one of your other drives I believe it is possible to daisy chain firewire drives together. I only suggest this because, if I am not mistaken, you only have one Thunderbolt port. This would allow you to move the files from one firewire drive to another without having to first move them to the internal hard drive and then move them again to another drive. So the files are primarily large video files. I just tried daisy chaining another external drive to the slow one. Going from the slow one plugged into the regular one and then into the computer. The drive still performs extremely slow. Even opening the folders in finder takes a while. And trying to transfer ~130gb of files tells me it will take 44 days.

All I can say is wow! Saying that is slow is an understatement. I will keep looking for another way to do this and hopefully in the mean time someone else will chime in with a better solution than I offered.
