Old HP tower which won't see HIS Radeon HD 5770

I have an old HP tower thats been sitting around for years not doing anything.

It's a g3200.uk, core duo 1.6ghz, 1gb ram running windows 7 x64.

I recently was given a Radeon 5770 GPU which I thought I would stick in the PC but after nearly 2 weeks of trying I've had no luck to get it working.

The PC has a PCI-e slot (not sure what version though?) so thought it was a simple case of sticking it in and bobs your uncle!

GPU is in and 6pin power cable attached. When the pc boots with the gpu in, all the fans kick in at full speed? Not sure what thats about??

I've disabled the onboard graphics, set the BIOS to PCI-e and have been trying to install CCC but with no luck.

It's says it's installed but has an error log at the end but doesn't say what? but it also looks as though the program hasn't installed properly as theres no CCC app to open up?

So... 2 questions really...

1. Why won't CCC install properly?

2. Why won't the PC see the 5770? (is the PC way too old, power supply not good enough?)

Any help is appreciated!!

I know you were just given the card, but you can't rule out it got damaged from point a to point b until you try it in another machine. Not all driver versions come with a central utility. I.e. - nvidia control panel or catalyst control center. Have to make sure you download the suite and not just the driver.

Is the bios seeing the card when you have it seated?

Okay thanks I can give this ago. But by uninstalling the onboard graphics will I not be able to see anything.

As currently I get absolutely no picture form the 5770.

That's what is weird to me.. Even with no driver installed but the card seated, you should still get picture. The only thing I can think of other than the card or the slot being bad, is some sort of driver conflict. Try removing the driver and using the card. And yes, it should show up in the bios of you go to your PCI device list. If you uninstall the driver and you still get no picture, enable the onboard card and reinstall those drivers to get back to square one. That's all the advice I can really give you without trouble shooting other things physically at this point.

But yea, you will still get picture with no drivers installed for your onboard. It just won't look as good until you have drivers installed :)

Right decided I'm going to get a slightly newer PC off EBAY a Dell Precision 390 core 2 duo 2.13ghz, 2gb ram.

Whats the chances I can run the 5770 in that?

Also I might also be getting my hands on a Radeon HD 5830, would that work in the Dell PC??

Thanks

The computer you listed to purchase doesn't seem like a very worthy upgrade in todays standards, even for a "cheap" pc. You can find way better deals than that.

What is the card requiring for power? 2 6 pin connections or just one? A 5770 shouldnt require more than 1 i think. As long as you have the power connectors properly in place, power shouldn't be an issue. If your pc won't see it in the bios, im willing to bet its your mobo PCI slot, and not the card.
