Hey guys i recently put together a new computer, and set up a custom loop cooling my cpu, everything was running well but a month in and my pump has started becoming very loud, it happened about 2 weeks ago but gradually went away so i presumed it was trapped air in my system which worked itself out, but it has returned and alot louder and has stayed like this for two days i have tried rocking the computer, taking the the pump/res out to see if it was vibrations on the case but none of this has helped, i was just wondering if you guys know what this could be? an airlock or possibly a faulty pump? i will upload a video of the noise when i get home from work, any help appreciated

Solution

Yes this means that the pump is bad. RMA it.
Look for a 'Speed Control' dial on the pump (described well in the second video I posted).

If your pump does not have a built-in control, then you can add a "Fan Speed Controller" which will also work for pumps (not just fans). Make If you go this route make sure that the voltage and Amps are compatible.

i dont think my pump has a speed control dial on it, and it doesnt have a PWM connecter so i cant attach it to my mother board to control it through speedfan, its the bayres pump combo

I have ruled out an airlock as I drained the loop and made a closed loop with just one tubing of about half a Meyer from the inlet to the outlet of the pump and filled and bleed that closed loop and it was still very loud, I have a lamptron fc5 fan controller but don't know how to connect it to my pump? From the pump molex to the fan controller?

Yes this controller will work. It has up to 35 watts per channel and will be adequate for the pump at max speeds. http://www.lamptron.com/product/controllers/fc5-v2/

Yes connect the pump Molex to the fan controller and connect the controller to the PSU.

okay thankyou very much, i will need a molex to 3 pin adapter to connect the pump?, or i could cut the molex but i dont want to do that because if it doesnt fix it i can still rma the pump

Yes right! At this point all the evidence (pump sound) points to too high RPMs. After installing the speed control if the pump is defective the sounds will still be there and your option will be to RMA the pump and maybe go to a better class of pump. Yes, get the Molex adapter to connect the pump to the speed control.

Use the 4-pins Molex to either 3-pins or 4-pins fan connector.

In cases like this I usually browse at a local computer store, and the techs will find me something suitable. In other cases I have spliced the right connectors and made up my own, and if you are going this route just ensure that the polarities are correct. And when splicing, stagger the joints and solder them; wire nuts are OK but not my first option.

Okay I made up to wire and connected up to my fan controller and found that it was still loud even when I put the rpm down, so looks like my only option is to RMA the pump, thanks for all your help
